photos of vienna

wanted to share some photos of my weekend in vienna.  was such a lovely time.  i saw the SUN!!  first time in a while.  and ate so many delcious foods...cakes and pastries and schnitzel and goulash.  and lots of coffee, and some hot chocolate, too!  quite a taste sensation.  for the ears as well...we went to a concert that was basically "mozart's greatest hits."  totally for tourists, but it was lovely.  and after seeing the home he lived in in vienna, it was pretty cool to listen to his music knowing a bit more about him.  anyway, we had fun.  here are some photos...

gorgeous fall day!!

breakfast at Cafe Aida.  the funny thing is, i ordered for us in russian cuz neither waitress spoke english, but one of them spoke a little russian.  amazing.

me, vito (friend of sibilla's), and my friend sibilla.  sibi was one of my assistant venue managers at New Frontier at the sundance film fest last year.  she's awesome.  lives between rome and new zealand.  you kinda can't get much cooler than that.

this cafe is a wine bar, and meat shop.  literally, the sign said "wine and ham."  tasty!

chocolates!!!!

i was obessesed with the sun.  i felt like a kid in that sci-fi short story by ray bradbury maybe...where the sun only comes out once/year, and all the school children run out to greet it on that day.

i loved this guy.  just chillin' with matisse.

stall selling i think some kind of freshly pressed fremented drink...strum...it's a first pressing during the wine harvest.  very little alcohol and very sweet.

view of st stephan's cathedral

horses awaiting their riders outside st stephan's

schnitzel bigger than sibi's hand!!

so their ears don't get cold?

gorgeous roof tiles on st stephan's

sibi going for a wander

me outside mozart's house.

a fun art project along one alley in town.  mirrors were hung on various walls at various heights.

cafe aida!  i had no idea of it's fame.  actually, i didn't know much about vienna.  thank goodness sibi did some research.  tho i didn't really care what we did.  as long as the sun was shining and we were eating pastries, i didn't care.  but this place is very traditional, and has a great sachet torte.

ok.  look closely.  this street musician has quite a defining feature.  good thing, cuz he was terrible at the piano.

not sure what building it is...but it looks very beautiful.

the rathaus!  i love that name.

cute street trams.  it's such a qaint city!

the little guy's on duty today.

i don't think this place is living up to it's name.

a leaning lending library!  such a cool trend these days...leave a book, take a book!

st stephan's at night

the naschmarkt.  the largest open-air market in vienna.  food stalls, flea market, and small cafes.  pretty heavenly.

very suspicious woman buying cheese.

even more spices than the spice market in istanbul.  if i wasn't moving to sochi soon (with no kitchen), i would be totally stocking up.

this day was a celebratory day for austrian culture as we came to find out.  so many people were dressed in leiderhosen.  pretty cool.

balsamic vinegar casks.

i LOVE these sellers.  the dude on the left even has earrings.

yep...wearing my leiderhosen...carrying my bugle.

leiderhosen go with everything.  even doc martins!

view from the top of the ferris wheel.

lady leiderhosen!

sacher hotel for tort, cake, and hot chocolate!

music hall.  the musicians were all dressed up as if in mozart's time.  it was pretty cheesy, but also fun.  and now i know way more about mozart and strauss.  after this concert, we went to a museum - it was "long night at the museums" day.  it only happens once/year.  most museums stay open until at least 1am.  so we went to the leopold, and saw some klimt, and also schiele.  i knew klimt.  never heard of schiele.  but they were contemporaries in turn-of-the-century vienna, and caused quite a splash in the modern art scene.

was a beautiful trip.  fun to get away to a new place, with new food and good friends.  see some art, listen to some tunes.  a grand weekend!
