sept 1 is the first day of school in russia. and it's a really big deal. every kid dresses up, and brings balloons and flowers for their teachers. and the youngest kids are led into the school holding the hands of the oldest students. there is an assembly beforehand where speeches are made, songs are sung, and the next class of kindergartners are welcomed into the school. there is a school across the street from my building. it is tucked back behind a fence, but here is what i could see on my way to work:
